You Deserve A Seat at The Table: Overcoming Imposter Syndrome

by | Mar 24, 2023 | Business Tips

Are you struggling with doubt and feeling that you aren’t qualified to successfully run your social media? If so, hold your chin up! If we can do it, you can too. Today we will teach you how to address and overcome imposter syndrome. It is completely normal to feel like you don’t belong in your industry or the business world, but you can face your fears with just a few tips and tricks.

Recognize it

First and foremost, you must recognize that you have imposter syndrome to overcome it. Here are a few signs that you have imposter syndrome:

  1. You don’t have a sense of belonging in your field or the business world.
  2. You find it hard to accept praise.
  3. You forget how hard you worked to make it where you are.
  4. You apologize when you didn’t do anything wrong.
  5. You hold yourself to high or impossible standards.
  6. You avoid expressing confidence because you think people will see it as overcompensating or obnoxious.

There are several ways to overcome these feelings and feel like you belong.

Own it

One of the best ways to overcome imposter syndrome is by owning it. Express your feelings and openly admit that you struggle with imposter syndrome. You will find that other people think the same way about you, but do not think you are an imposter. They will often reassure you and tell you that you deserve your success.

Separate Your Feelings From Facts

Sometimes you have to sit down and separate the way you are feeling from what is true. Just because you feel dumb or out of place does not mean that you are dumb and out of place. Identify what part of your struggle is real and what part is made up in your head. What part of your imposter syndrome comes from the way you feel and what comes from real-life facts and experiences? Addressing your feelings will help you own your imposter syndrome.

Know That You Aren’t Alone

No one is safe from imposter syndrome. Everyone experiences it and wonders if they deserve the success they have worked for. Knowing that other successful people don’t feel like they belong is a good reminder that you’re not alone.

Focus on The Positive

Everyone makes mistakes, and you have to forgive yourself. Read your positive reviews and emails to remind yourself that you are successful and that people like what you do. Hold onto compliments and allow them to change your attitude about yourself.

Be Kind to Yourself

Everyone has an inner dialog. Ask yourself, “How am I talking to myself?” If you would not say the same things to yourself that you would say to a little kid, you probably shouldn’t be saying them to yourself. Stop speaking harshly to yourself, because you don’t deserve it. Even if you can’t compliment yourself, change the rude wording you are currently using. Positive affirmations work.

Visualize Your Success

Imagine where you want to be, and picture yourself there. A common trait between successful people is that they imagine the future they want for themselves. Many people find that journaling about their goals or creating vision boards helps them find success.

Celebrate

Never hesitate to celebrate your success. If you reach a goal you set for yourself, make time to celebrate. You can celebrate alone, celebrate with family, or host a party. It doesn’t matter how you choose to celebrate as long as you take the time to recognize your achievements. Pat yourself on the back and remind yourself that you are doing a good job!

Fake it ‘til you Make it

Fake it ‘til you make it is a real thing. You don’t have to wait until everything is perfect to start feeling like you belong. Don’t wait until you feel confident to start putting yourself out there. You are successful and worthy no matter where you are in your journey. Courage comes from taking risks. Don’t wait. Done is better than perfect.

Find Your Seat at The Table

Imposter syndrome is a common feeling in which people doubt their skills and qualifications despite evidence of their success. To overcome imposter syndrome, you must recognize it, own it, separate feelings from facts, know you are not alone, focus on the positive, be kind to yourself, visualize success, celebrate accomplishments, and fake it until you make it. By following these tips and tricks, you can overcome imposter syndrome and believe in your abilities.
