Just like that website we discussed last week, many businesses set up their social media profiles and then… well, they forget about them. It’s time to dust off those digital corners and give your socials the attention they deserve. Think of it as polishing your online storefront!

Seriously, these revisions are necessary, at least annually. Things change – links break, information becomes outdated, and you want to ensure everything is accurate. It’s also a prime opportunity to check for those pesky spoof accounts. We recently dealt with someone impersonating and stealing content on our TikTok – it was our team who spotted it! Regular checks are vital for maintaining your brand integrity.

 

13 Steps to Help you Whip your Social Media Into Shape:

  1. Create a Master List: Compile a spreadsheet of all your profiles and pages. This helps ensure your company name is consistent across every platform, eliminates duplicates, and allows you to identify any potential fake accounts. Consistency in your branding, like having “Jenny sells donuts” on Instagram and not “Donuts by Jenny” on Facebook, is key.
  2. Verify Your URLs: Once you have your list, double-check that all your profile URLs are accurate and consistent. You’d be surprised how often companies have slight variations (a period here, a hyphen there). Uniformity is essential.
  3. Update Profile Pictures and Cover Photos: Ensure your headshot and cover photos are current and professional. Consider seasonal or holiday-themed cover art to keep things fresh. Don’t forget to update your personal profile picture too!
  4. Review Your Branding: Has your logo been updated? Are you using the correct version and colors across all your social media materials? Social media is immediate; your branding needs to be too.
  5. Complete Your Facebook and LinkedIn Profiles: While platforms like Instagram and TikTok offer business accounts, Facebook and LinkedIn require personal profiles to manage business pages. Make sure your profile reflects you, your company, and your position effectively, especially your “what’s in it for me” statement on LinkedIn. These profiles act as your digital representative when you’re not present. Critically, ensure your business affiliations on your personal profiles link directly to your business pages. These backlinks are invaluable. Also, ensure your contact details on your business pages are accurate. On your personal profiles, be cautious about sharing excessive personal information. Review your privacy settings annually, as platforms often implement updates that might change your preferences (like Instagram’s recent location tracking update). Be mindful of the information you share, especially your birth year.
  6. Polish Your “About” Sections: This is prime real estate! Ensure your branding is consistent, and review and optimize the text with clear, concise language packed with relevant keywords. Your value proposition should be evident and consistent across all platforms. Verify your contact information and call to action are accurate and reflect your preferred method of contact. Double-check your hours and address, including your Google address, as incorrect information can lead to lost opportunities and even misplaced employees! Set realistic business hours and utilize autoresponders to manage expectations. Finally, ensure all listed links in your “about” sections are working correctly.
  7. Check Your Pinned Post: Each platform has its way of pinning content. Ensure this pinned content is current and relevant. Update the covers and categories of your saved stories and organize your reels into logical playlists on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube to enhance user experience.
  8. Update Hashtags: Ideally, refresh your hashtags quarterly, but at least twice a year. Check for hijacked hashtags and ensure they are still relevant and driving the engagement you desire. Remember, hashtags are crucial on platforms like Instagram and Twitter but less so on LinkedIn and Facebook.
  9. Analyze Your Insights and Analytics: You can’t improve what you don’t measure. Regularly check your platform analytics (both organic and paid, if applicable) to understand what content performs best and on which platforms. If a platform isn’t yielding results and draining your limited bandwidth, consider reducing your presence there and focusing on where you see the most traction. Adapt your content strategy based on what resonates with your audience.
  10. Review Your Content Calendar: Having a content calendar streamlines your content creation process and saves you time. Regularly review and adjust it to align with your goals and analytics.
  11. Check Out Your Competition (Strategically): Don’t become obsessed, but a periodic check of your competitors’ successful strategies can provide valuable insights for your own plan. Don’t copy, but learn and adapt.
  12. Clean Up Who You Follow: Unfollow accounts you no longer engage with, leave irrelevant groups, and, crucially, block those spam bots!
